Welcome to Piano!

In my lessons I offer a dynamic and comprehensive approach to piano education suitable for students of all ages and skill levels. I teach various styles including classical, jazz, pop, and more, ensuring that each student receives a well-rounded musical education tailored to their individual interests and goals.

For beginners, I focus on building a strong foundation in piano playing, my curriculum incorporates acclaimed methods such as the Faber, Bastien, Piano Safari, or Piano Pronto lesson books. Unless a student is already working through a different method book, I normally teach using the Lesson & Theory books by Faber Piano Adventures. These books teach basic piano technique and introduces basic music theory. If the student has note labels on their keyboard, they can remove them at this stage. If a student brings a piece they would really love to learn I am always open to working on other pieces alongside these method books. Otherwise, this is the material I prepare to teach:

Students working through the Piano Adventures Primer & level 1 lesson/theory books learn these skills:

  1. Hand position & finger numbers
  2. Note values & note names
  3. Steps/skips and tonic/dominant notes
  4. Legato/staccato

Students working through Piano Adventures level 2A & 2B learn these skills:

  1. 8th note rhythm patterns
  2. Cm, Gm, Dm, Am 5-finger scales
  3. Tempos including Andante, Moderato, and Allegro
  4. Introduction to Alfred's Scales, Chords, Arpeggios, and Cadences

Students working through Piano Adventures level 3A & 3B learn these skills:

  1. New time signatures
  2. Swing rhythm
  3. Common time & cut time
  4. Continued study of Alfred's Scales, Chords, Arpeggios, and Cadences

Students working through Piano Adventures level 4 & 5 learn these skills:

  1. Chord inversion study
  2. Circle of fifths & quality of intervals
  3. Three forms of minor scales
  4. Changing time signatures

Beyond PA 5:

At this point, the student is well prepared to play pieces equivalent to ABRSM level 4 / RCM level 4. I shift away from method books and teach based on the RCM curriculum, which covers all aspects of piano playing. This includes advanced studies of technique, musicianship, musical literacy, repertoire, ear-training, sight-reading, and theory. The RCM curriculum prepares students for piano exams and is based on a classical style so the student is introduced to Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and 21st Century repertoire. Outside of this curriculum, I also like to introduce more styles of music such as pop or jazz. However, the pieces selected are primarily based on the student's interest and goals. My main focus is ensuring that the student enjoys what they're playing as It maintains motivation to practice.
